Malus spp.
Fall.

Switzerland, mid-1800s. Also grown widely in Germany; first brought to the U.S. in 1939.

Mainly a cooking apple, this is the traditional variety used for apple strudel in much of Europe. Holds its distinct bell shape when baked whole. (The German name translates to Bell Apple.) Firm dry flesh is a pale yellow and tart, sharp and lemony if eaten out of hand. Medium-to-large fruit ripens from green to yellow with red blush, covered with a net of russet that radiates from the deep and narrow stem cavity. Fruit stores well.

Vigorous scab resistant trees. Blooms midseason. Zone 5.
