Summer.

Asahi × Kitsukawasei. Prefectural Horticultural Experiment Station, Kanagawa, Japan, 1973.

Also known as Ichiban Nashi or ChojuIchiban means ‘first’ and nashi means ‘pear’—this is one of the earliest Asian pears to ripen (though not earlier than Hamese). Choju means ‘long life,’ perhaps referring to its ability to keep in storage, or maybe eating it will bless you with longevity!

Tender yellow flesh is crisp, juicy and sweet. Medium-sized oblong fruit has light golden skin with slight russeting. Ripens just before Shinseiki. Will store for up to 2 months.

Requires a second pear variety for pollination. Zone 4.
