Chance seedling. Kawasaki, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan, about 1895.

Sweet and rich with a distinctive butterscotch flavor when ripened on the tree. White flesh is firm, crisp, somewhat coarse and not overly juicy. Medium-sized oblate to lopsided fruit with greenish-brown to brown medium-thick skin overlaid with thin smooth russet. Short picking period. Unbruised early-picked fruit will store for a few months in the root cellar.

An older variety that has been used to breed some popular varieties like Shinseiki. Medium-sized vigorous dense very productive tree, with a spreading, slightly drooping form. Requires a second pear variety for pollination. Zone 4/5.
