Vaccinium vitis-idaea

12-15" Collected by Albert Zimmer from a wild German heath.

High-yielding plant produces very large bright red berries, wicked tart until dead ripe in late summer when they develop their excellent flavor, richer and less astringent than bog cranberries. Can be munched fresh but best in sauces, jams, syrups, fruit leathers, juices and wines. Stores up to 2 months in the fridge.

Spreading groundcover with shiny green leaves. Prefers poor acidic soil and full sun. Plant more than one variety, 12–18" apart, for good pollination and fruit set. Zone 2.
