Late season.
Chance seedling, early 1800s. An obscure all-purpose American heritage variety making a comeback!
Pink berries are thick-skinned, slipskin, aromatic and good for fresh eating, juice, jelly and sparkling wine. Spicy sweet dessert grape when eaten fresh.
Around Cincinnati during the 1840s, Nicholas Longworth made America’s first internationally famous sparkling wines known as “Pink Cats” from the Catawba grape. It was among the world’s most famous American grapes at a time when new American winemakers were trying to differentiate themselves from European winemaking traditions. At one point, Cincinnati was known as the “Rhine of America” before its vineyards failed.
In a resurgence of interest, growers are realizing Catawba requires less spraying in the face of climate warming and that its earlier failures in Ohio were due to planting techniques, not to disease issues of the grape itself! Skeleton Root in Ohio is one of the winemakers bringing Catawba back! Zone 5.
