Item: 7279-A
stock details: 3–6' bare-root trees
Malus spp.
Winter, red skin.

Heirloom of uncertain origin, possibly western NJ before 1700. One of the oldest and most revered of all American varieties.

True to its name, one of the best for cider. (SG 1.054, acidity 0.8%, tannin 0.17%) Tart reddish juice. Also considered outstanding for pies. Conic and somewhat rounded fruit is almost entirely covered with reddish blush and deeper red stripes, sometimes with a prominent pinkish russet splash and some red russet netting. Keeps until early spring.

Although not normally associated with northern New England, over the years many old-timers have told John Bunker about trees they remember from their youth and old trees can still be found here and there. Adaptable to many soils and climates. Blooms mid-late. Zone 4.
