Monarda fistulosa

3–4' tall.

Native wildflower with aromatic tubular lavender blossoms in July and August. Beloved by a wide host of bees and butterflies, including monarchs, fritillaries, swallowtails and skippers. Hummingbirds can’t resist it either. Good for borders, for wet areas and for cutting.

This is the species most commonly used for medicinal purposes. Infusion of the aerial parts can be used to improve digestion by reducing flatulence. Foliage is also aromatic and delicious used as tea or added to meat and bean dishes.

Plant 16–20" apart in moist well-drained soil, sun or shade; in shade its bloom time is longer but foliage is more susceptible to powdery mildew. Somewhat drought tolerant. Self sows and forms a nice clump over time. Native throughout much of North America. Zone 3.

Maine Grown.
