Ornamental snow-white blossoms on a dense spreading tree that can grow considerably taller than other crabs. Persistent long-stemmed 1/2" crimson fruits are sour and somewhat astringent, good for preserves, baking and blending in cider.
Perhaps the hardiest Malus species, native to a large swath of Asia. Withstands extremely cold conditions where most apples would fail and is also highly tolerant of drought, making this an important species for breeding climate-resilient varieties. Also used as a hardy rootstock in challenging apple-growing regions, like Alaska. While there are a number of grafted baccata selections (including Dolgo), these are seedlings and each will be unique. Zone 2.
