12-14' x 18' M. floribunda Exzellenz Thiel x M. pumila Niedzwetzkyana. Spaeth Nursery, Germany, 1914. Also called Oekonomierat Echtermeyer.
One of the few true weeping crabs, with tufts and mounds stepping down nearly to the ground from the rounded crown. More wide-spreading than Red Jade. Very red buds look like clusters of berries contrasting the faintly bronzed foliage. Buds open to large loose single pink blossoms. Long-stemmed roundish bright red 1" fruit.
We first learned about this crab from Roger Luce of Newburgh, ME. Roger had an outstanding ornamental crab collection. He and Lyle Littlefield were close friends and many of Roger’s crabs (including this one) can be found at the Lyle Littlefield Gardens in Orono. This tree is very rare and not found anywhere else in the trade as far as we can tell. Early to midseason blooming. Z3. BACK after a long absence!
(Semi-dwarf: 2½–5' bare-root trees)
