This is a twig for grafting. Summer, red-striped and blushed skin, white flesh. Summer. Russia, 1700s. One of many Russian varieties imported to the U.S. in the 1800s in the search for cold-hardy apples that could survive northern climates. Medium-to-large roundish flattened fruit has glossy skin that is ivory white with thin red stripes and bright pink blush. Firm bright white flesh is brisk, juicy, flavorful, and like most summer apples more tart than sweet. Good for fresh eating and great for sauce and pies. Keeps surprisingly well for an early apple, up to 2 months in cold storage. Ripens mid-August in central Maine. Blooms midseason. Zone 3. NEW!
