Pyrus communis
Early fall.

Unknown parentage. Pownal, ME.

We got our first crop of these a few autumns ago were blown away. The skin is thick and leathery, but the flesh is amazing: rich, sweet and melting—everything you could want in a pear. Fruit is large and very clean with no cracking, very pest resistant. Great for fresh eating or cooking. Won a judge’s award at out local Common Ground Country Fair exhibition in 2023.

Introduced to us by June Lacombe and Bill Ginn of Hawk Ridge Farm in Pownal, ME, whose beautiful locally famous tree dominates their backyard. We initially suspected that this was the French heirloom Beurre d’Amalis, but recent DNA test results have debunked that.

The tree is vigorous and healthy with better branch angles than most pears. Plant a second variety for best pollination. Zone 4/5.
