Prunus armeniaca
Midsummer, red-speckled orange skin.

Heirloom variety from Blenheim village in Oxfordshire, England. Brought to California in the 1880s, it thrived in the climate of the Sacramento and Santa Clara valleys and became famous as the standard for apricots.

Medium-sized orange fruit speckled with red is sweet, aromatic and firm yet juicy. Great for fresh eating, canning and drying. Summer of 2024 we were fortunate enough to get a flat of these from Scott Farm in Dummerston, VT, and the fruits inspired us to keep working against the odds to grow apricots in the Northeast. After devouring as many as we could fresh, we dried the rest. Their high sugar content, low moisture and freestone flesh makes them a breeze to process into chewy sweet-tart candy-like treats for the winter. Self-fertile. Zone 5, on trial in Zone 4.
