Native to western North America. Cheery bright yellow daisy-like flowers can be prepared, either fresh or dried, in compresses and salves as an external remedy to reduce swelling and bruising caused by traumatic injury, and on arthritic joints. It is generally accepted as a substitute for the official European A. montana.
Plants spread by rhizome and can fill in to make a nice low-growing patch. Handsome as a bedding plant and attractive to pollinators. Blooms midsummer, around July in Maine.
Surface sow in pots, then stratify seed and give it light to germinate. Plant in full sun 1' apart in moist well-drained soil. ~1,200 seeds/g.
