Morus alba

30×20' Entirely sweet small white berries reminiscent of mini-marshmallows growing on a very hardy tree. White mulberries lack the tang of purple varieties, but offer subtle flavors of honey, vanilla and melon.

Sent to us by Scott Skoerboe, the longtime propagator at Fort Collins Wholesale Nursery in Colorado. Originated at the Ag Canada Morden Station in Manitoba, where winter temps can drop below –40˚. Self-fruitful. Zone 2.

Mulberries Morus spp.

Sweet flavorful purple-black 1" blackberry-like fruit is delicious fresh, in sauces, pies, fruit leather or smoothies. What fruit you don’t pick, the birds will. Great tree for viewing a huge variety of birds up close. Plant it next to the chicken pen where it will rain chicken feed into the yard for several weeks, or put down a sheet to collect the fruit as it falls.

Dense round-topped tree is one of the last to leaf out in the spring. Fast growing, even in poor soils. We offer grafted female varieties, which are self-fruitful.

Growing Mulberries

  • Soil: Adaptable, but prefers moist well-drained soil. Rugged! Withstands pollution, drought, wind and salt.
  • Sun: Full sun to part shade.
  • Pollination: Mulberries are dioecious, but female trees do not need a male to set fruit. You just need one!
  • Spacing: 20–30' apart
