Prunus cerasus
Summer.

Developed at the Fruit Research Institute in Érd, Hungary. Michigan State University intro, early 2000s. Also known as Érdi Jubileum.

Glossy firm deep purple-black-red large cherries are good for both fresh eating and cooking. While classified as a pie cherry, it’s a cross between sweet and tart and has a nice balance of the two. Morello-type, with dark red flesh and red juice. Ripens around 10 days before Montmorency.

Part of the long-running Hungarian tart cherry breeding program supported by U of MI emeritus Dr. Amy Lezzoni, whose work has centered around bringing more diverse pie cherry options to U.S. home gardens. At a breeding class held in the orchard, students chose Julileum as their favorite pick of the day. Self-fertile. Zone 4.
