If you’ve noticed tiny flies hovering around your houseplants or greenhouse containers, and your plants are looking sick, fungus gnats are likely the culprit. Fungus Gnat Killer gets to the root of the problem (pun intended), targeting the larvae living in your soil.
The active ingredient is Bacillus thuringiensis subsp. israelensis strain AM65-52, a naturally occurring soil bacterium with larvicidal properties. Effective against fungus gnats in the genera Bradysia and Orfelia, it can be used wherever these pests crop up: houseplants, ornamentals, vegetable seedlings, herbs and cannabis/hemp.
Fungus gnat larvae feed on organic matter in the soil, and when that runs out, they turn to eating plant roots, which stunts growth, yellows foliage and causes leaves to drop. Seedlings and young plants are especially vulnerable since their root systems aren’t yet fully developed to withstand such pressure. Beyond root damage, both larvae and adults can spread plant pathogens, including serious fungal diseases like Pythium blight, Botrytis, Verticillium wilt, Fusarium wilt and black root rot.
Mix 1 to 1½ teaspoons of granules per gallon of water, stir thoroughly, and apply as a soil drench with a watering can, making sure to thoroughly wet the entire surface of the soil. Repeat once a week for at least 3 weeks. After that, continuing with a lower maintenance dose will help keep gnats from coming back. Note that this product targets larvae only and will not control adult gnats.
To prevent future fungus gnat infestations, avoid overwatering, and choose mediums and containers that facilitate good drainage. Also, reduce the organic-matter content of your medium, especially in the top 1–3” of the container.
