Virginia Bluebells

Mertensia pulmonarioides Clusters of nodding bell-shaped flowers held above veined oval leaves. Pink buds open to sky-blue or purple-blue flowers which look like those of Pulmonaria (lungwort). Clump-forming plant with erect stems is beautiful in shade displays with ferns, with bleeding hearts, with daffodils or squill.

Also called Virginia Cowslip; was formerly Mertensia virginica. Prefers moist lowlands and slightly acidic woodsy soil in part shade. Dormant in summer. Native to eastern North America.

18–24" tall. Mid Spring blooms, Z3-8. #1 transplants, nursery propagated.
