Chelone glabra

2–4' tall. Unique North American native wildflower features white hooded blossoms. Chelone is Greek for ‘tortoise,’ hence its common name Turtlehead. Upright stems with boldly veined shiny green leaves  are topped by elegant spikes of hooded flowers shaped very much like a turtle’s head. One of the last flowers to bloom, along with the asters, a final feast for the bumblebees.

Try planting en masse at the mouth of a woodland path or at the water’s edge; it’s also happy in garden beds. Deer avoid the bitter foliage. Dappled sunlight is recommended, but ours is flourishing on the shady north side of the house. Plant about 12" apart in moist soil. Z4. (bare-root crowns)
