This classic reishi we come upon in wet woods of the Northeast and Appalachia grows exclusively on hemlock. Shelf mushroom with attractive brown-to-orange and yellow body with a white lip. While not widely considered a culinary mushroom, first growth while the fruiting body is still entirely white is edible and enjoyed by many growers and foragers. As the mushroom matures and develops color it becomes too tough and bitter to eat. At this stage reishi is harvested and prepared for medicinal use.
Reishi responds only to hemlock log inoculation and fruits within 12-24 months. After an initial 12-month inoculation period, we recommend burying the logs under a few inches of soil, from which the mushrooms will emerge. This helps mimic and supplement that natural symbiosis of wood and soil ecosystems. Not recommended for beginner growers and is a somewhat experimental spawn strain for most home growers.
