Hydrangea quercifolia

3-4' × 3-5' Snow Queen × Pee Wee. U.S. National Arboretum, 2010 intro.

Pyramidal 9"-long upright panicles of white flowers in late spring mature to deep rose becoming nearly ruby red in cool fall weather. Exfoliating bark provides winter interest. Broad lobed leaves are dark green and turn dark red in fall, sometimes hanging on the branch into early winter. Bring in the dried flowers and let them dress up your winter bouquets.

Low maintenance with no noticeable pest or disease pressure. Prefers full to part sun, well-drained moist soil. Prune after flowering, since it blossoms on old wood. Oakleaf hydrangea is the only native hydrangea species in the U.S. Zone 5.
