18–24" tall. Northeastern native fern remains evergreen in warmer zones, where it’s widely used for Christmas cut greenery.
Shuttlecock of fronds with ladder-like parallel leathery dark green leaves is partially evergreen in cooler climates. Offers good fall interest and emerges in very early spring to complement woodland flowers.
Provides habitat for all manner of small critters, more so than other ferns because of its evergreen nature.
Prefers moist acidic soil and light shade, tolerates sun given sufficient moisture. Plant 2–3' apart. Zone 3.
