Ceanothus americanus

2-3' × same.

Small compact shrub bearing white odorless 1–2" long flowers late June into July. Attracts a wide assortment of pollinators, and among award-winning horticulturist and author William Cullina’s top 10 plants for butterfly gardens. The Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens in Boothbay has a stunning patch that fizzes with insects when in full bloom. Leaves were used as a tea substitute during the American Revolution and for medicine long before then by native peoples. The root bark is deep red and can be used for dyeing wool a cinnamon color.

Grows in depleted infertile ground, especially dry acidic conditions. Deep vigorous roots fix atmospheric nitrogen and make it a great candidate for stabilizing sandy slopes. Full to partial sun. Native to North America. Z4.
