Native to eastern North America, a cheerful addition to any sunny garden. Spring-emerging stems and flowerbuds have a reddish tint, adding color interest as they approach flowering in early summer. Yellow 2" flowers open in the morning and feed many generalist and specialist bee species. We love to see the little green sweat bees flying circles around the blossoms in June. Long bloom time. Stems and seedheads fade back to reddish hues in the late summer and early fall.
Clump-forming as they get established; they won’t crowd out other plants but can hold their own. They’ve gone a little feral in our garden, but they’re easy to rein in. Prefers a sunny moderately dry spot, but adaptable. Too much shade will lead to leggy plants. Zone 4.
