These dazzling blooms are all the rage with florists and cutflower enthusiasts, and the hype is not undeserved. The Italian-bred cultivars we offer (Anemone coronaria) are elegant and distinct, with textured foliage, poppy-like blooms, and rich petal hues set beautifully against a violet-to-black central “eye”.

These cultivars thrive in cool spring weather. Although they have a reputation for being challenging to grow, they are worth the effort. If you don’t have an optimal in-ground site, they can be grown successfully in pots.

All anemone species are generally known as windflowers—anemon is ‘wind’ in Greek. A. coronaria—also known as poppy anemone, crown anemone and Italian anemone—is native to regions of the eastern Mediterranean.

Detailed growing instructions will be included with your order. Here’s the gist:

Zones 4-6: Store corms in a cool dry place over winter. You can leave them in the bag they come in.

Start indoors in late winter, and plant out early spring, ideally in a greenhouse. If planting outdoors or in pots, be ready to protect them from freezing temps and hot spells with row cover/shade cloth.

Zones 7-10: Plant in fall for spring blooms. Mulch or protect with frost cloth over winter. Will perennialize in good conditions, yet some growers prefer to dig corms after summer dormancy, and replant in fall.

Items from our perennial plants warehouse will ship around late September through October. Bulbs can be planted successfully up until your ground freezes.
