8-10' × same. Boskoop, Netherlands.
Upright spreading shrub with velvety dark purple foliage and amazing purplish-pink inflorescences that look like large smoke puffs on top of the branches throughout summer. Each one of these poofs is composed of a web of fine stems, the smallest of which are lined with tiny hairs that reflect the light and create an ethereal effect. Quite remarkable. For maximum glow, plant where the sun will shine through each luminescent leaf.
Red-burgundy fall color. Some say to cut it to the ground each fall for more vigorous and brightly colored growth, but we do nothing and it has matured into a large glowing irregularly shaped shrub. Adaptable to a wide range of pH and soils although it prefers well-drained. Disease free. Native to southern Europe and China. Often considered a Zone 5 plant, but reliably grows back and flowers each summer in Zone 4.
