Prunus persica
Late season.

Spanish colonizers brought these historic red-fleshed peaches to North America as early as the 1500s.

Large fruits with dark crimson skin resemble beets. The clingstone flesh is often fully streaked with deep red, showing some golden-yellow beneath. Unlike most varieties, the fruit can be quite hard and tart when fully ripe. Makes beautiful pies, pickles and preserves.

Discovered and propagated by tribes including the Cherokee and Creek; sometimes known as Indian Blood. Disease-, pest- and drought-resistant trees are dependable and high yielding. Self-fertile. Zone 4.
