18-32" tall. Native across most of eastern North America, where it appears in small colonies in fields and adjacent to woods and marshes.
The golden-yellow flat umbels are comprised of numerous tiny quite cute flowers. Long bloom time, late spring to early summer. An important pollinator plant, it’s a larval host of the black swallowtail and Ozark swallowtail butterflies, and provides both pollen and nectar for azure butterflies and many species of native bees, beetles and wasps.
Plant in full to part sun. Prefers medium-wet soil but will tolerate drier conditions with mulch or alongside companion plants. Individual plants aren’t long-lived but will spread by seed. Ours pop up wild in a fallow field that was once pasture. Zone 3.
