Thermopsis caroliniana

36-48" tall. Also known as Carolina Lupine, native to woodland edges and meadows of Appalachia. Tall jaunty terminal racemes of yellow flowers attract myriad bees and butterflies from May into June. Looks like a bright yellow lupine.

Leguminous plant with attractive trifoliate leaves fixes nitrogen into the soil. Plant 2–3' apart in well-drained soil, full to partial sun. Its deep taproot provides some resiliency during drought. Z4.
