Scionwood shipping: around March 11, 2024.
Regular orders placed after March 4 will ship around late April through early-to-mid May, in the order in which they were received. Sorry, we cannot expedite these orders, add to existing orders or combine orders. Regular orders placed on or before March 4 will ship around March 26 through late April, starting with warmer areas and finishing in colder areas. Surplus Sale orders ship in the order in which we receive them after we have completed all regular order shipments. We will begin shipping Surplus Sale orders in early May and we will notify you of your estimated ship date as we approach that time. Sorry, we cannot expedite Surplus Sale orders or combine them with existing orders. Scionwood and early rootstock orders ship around March 11.

Brandywine Apple Scionwood

This is a twig for grafting. 20x20' M. ioensis ‘Plena’ Klehm’s No. 8 (M. x purpurea ‘Lemoinei’ x M. ‘Klehm’s Improved’)

Incredibly beautiful fragrant flowers followed by unbelievably bitter fruit. Deep red buds open to small deep pink double rose-like blossoms. Put an arrangement of these flowers in a vase, and people will swear they are roses. One of the most fragrant crabs.

Cidermakers love the unattractive 1-2" yellow fruit that drops in the fall and makes a mess. Very high in tannin. In Cider Digest some years ago, one grower wrote, “You ought to try planting a crab called ‘Brandywine’. WOW!!! what a real mouth-killer as far as tannin goes… Couldn’t tell you the acidity because my tongue had gone dead.”

Loosely rounded tree. Alternate bloomer. Blooms late. Z4.

Scionwood

Scions are twigs, not trees. They have no roots and will not grow if you plant them.

The deadline for ordering scionwood is February 16, 2024, for shipment around March 11. (Please note: we ship scionwood only in mid-March. If you would like to order rootstock to arrive in the same shipment, select mid-March shipping when adding the rootstock to your cart.)

We sell scionwood in two ways:

By the stick: One 8" stick will graft 3 or 4 trees.
By the foot: For orchardists grafting large numbers of trees of a particular variety, we also offer scionwood by the foot (minimum order of 10 feet per variety). In our own nursery work, we are usually able to graft 6-8 trees from one foot of scionwood.

You can graft right away or store scionwood for later use. It will keep quite well for several weeks stored in sealed ziplock bags in the refrigerator.
