High-quality summer apple for cooking and fresh eating. Small to medium-sized round fruit is pale yellow with scattered red stripes that blend together to form a red cheek on the sunny side. Bright clusters of color on the tree while most apples are still green. Fine-grained tender and juicy flesh is quite sweet for an early apple. In A View of the Cultivation of Fruit Trees and the Management of Orchards and Cider (1817) William Coxe describes Summer Rose as “an apple of singular beauty and excellence, both for eating and stewing…”
Fairly heavy crops ripen over a span of several weeks in mid-late August in central Maine, and can keep in the fridge for a couple weeks. Great for leisurely summer breakfasts, sauteed atop pancakes or baked into pastries. Late bloomer. Z4.
