Spreading dense rounded shrub with coarse branches that eventually arch to the ground. Perfect funnel-shaped 1–1¼" red flowers attract all the hummingbirds in the area and do not fade. Blooms in late spring and early summer, with a tendency to rebloom in late summer. Extremely adaptable, but prefers well-drained soil and thrives in full sun. Pollution tolerant; no serious disease or insect problems. Species introduced to U.S. in 1860 from Japan. Z4. (1–3')
