McDonald Crabapple

Malus 15x15' Parentage unknown. Burkettville, Maine.

A large-fruited culinary crab from midcoast Maine. The medium-small heavy-bearing tree sits on a knoll just behind Delton’s in-laws’ farmhouse. Each single white flower starts as a faintly rose-blushed bud.

According to Becky, Delton’s wife, shortly after her folks purchased the place in 1959, an elderly neighbor approached them and said she had been gathering fruit from a crabapple tree on their property for years. To her knowledge it was the only tree of its kind around. She eventually moved to Augusta but returned each year to help harvest the fruit for her famous pickled crabapples and jelly.

Z4. Maine Grown. (Semi-dwarf: 2½-5' bare-root trees)
