MalusBorowinka is another cold-hardy Russian rootstock, grown from the seeds of Duchess apples. The progeny of Duchess, or Duchess of Oldenburg, are very similar to the parent tree. Over the years we’ve offered other Duchess seedling apples, all just variations on a theme, including Nutting Bumpus and New Brunswicker. Duchess seedlings are extremely hardy and were among the first apples to be successfully grown north of Bangor. Whole fields in Aroostook county are overgrown with Duchess seedlings, and all of the fruit is similar. If you grow Borowinka into mature trees, you can expect good tart cooking and sauce apples. As a rootstock for grafting, it is vigorous, disease resistant and cold hardy.
Seed-starting instructions will be included with every purchase of tree seeds.
