Lady Apple

Malus spp Winter. Brittany, France. Popular since the 1600s during the reign of Louis XIII. Not to be confused with the modern apple Pink Lady.

Known in Europe as Api, these small aromatic apples were said to be carried around in the pockets of women as a perfume or deodorant to mask unpleasant smells. Also called Christmas Apple since the festive bright red and green glossy fruits can withstand a freeze and were commonly used to decorate wreaths and trees. White flesh is crisp and juicy, sweet-tart with hints of citrus. Good eaten fresh but prized as a culinary apple that works well in holiday foods like stuffings and chutneys, or served with ham and poultry. Stores well.

Blooms midseason. Z4. Maine Grown. (Standard: 3-6' bare-root trees)
