Magnificent twining vine with pinnate leaves, for pillars, trellises, arbors, walls, even trees. Long 12" racemes of lightly fragrant lilac-purple flowers with a lime-yellow accent at the center base of each petal, late spring or early summer. The racemes—each contain about 90 small flowers—dangle from the vine like grape clusters.
We’ve seen old twisting woody vines trained to look like sculptures—porch art for winter gazing. Bean-like smooth green seed pods to 4" long.
It can be tricky to get them to bloom in northern districts. We recommend light sandy soils, plenty of water and full sun. Prune one third of the growth each winter to encourage blooms. Vines can be quite powerful, so provide a very sturdy structure. Native of southeastern U.S. May need protection in Zone 4. (well-rooted transplants)
