Sweet low-acid flesh with high SG, suitable for fermented cider and cooking. Medium-sized fruit is oblate and ribbed, though not as deeply as Calville Blanc d’Hiver. Mostly covered with soft red stripes and blush.
In October 2014 we visited Rollins Orchard in Garland and Ernest Rollins took us to see the gigantic old wide-spreading tree, more than likely the original Royal Sweet. Specimens of the apple were sent from Garland to the USDA in 1894 where one was painted and added to the watercolor collection. Scionwood made available through the generosity of Rollins Orchard. Uncertain bloom time. Z4.
