Banane Amere Cider Apple

Malus spp. Early Fall. Full bittersweet cider apple. Claude Jolicoeur intro, Quebec, Canada, about 1997.

Medium-small yellow-green full bittersweet cider apple with a reddish blush. Medium-high in sugar, low in acidity and high in tannins. (SG 1.050–1.067) Very bitter.

The name translates to ‘bitter banana.’ Discovered by Jolicoeur, author of The New Cider Maker’s Handbook, on his farm where we visited the very tall multi-trunked seedling tree. It’s huge. Scab susceptible. Probably Z3. Maine Grown. (Semi-dwarf: 2½-5' bare-root trees)
